Service Families Heroes Club
Mrs Gower - Service Link Worker
At Alverstoke Junior School, we are proud of our link with the Armed Forces. Our Service families are very important to us and we recognise the struggle our little heroes go through when a family member is away from home.
Mrs Gower, our Service Family Link Worker is always on hand to offer advice and comfort to the children, having served in the Royal Navy and being a naval wife, she understands the struggles military life can throw at you.
We as a school provide support to not only the child but the whole family. Mrs Gower is always available afterschool for a
offers a number of opportunities for parents/carers to share any worries. The deployment pack each child receives when joining the school, contains a number of publications an assortment of activities and not forgetting the very special AJS Meerkat.
Each year group have an opportunity to email deployed parents and share their work, which supports both the child and the parent. The work is then saved in a scrapbook for the family to celebrate and treasure when the parent returns. Not forgetting the children whose parents work away during the week, there is fortnightly group, which gives the children the freedom to chat and share their worries with their peers.
We offer a heroes afterschool club, where children enjoy a number of activities such as reading, board games, quizzes, art, and craft and not forgetting Bingo (the children love it). In addition, every term we hold a special activity which in the past has included; movie night, Easter egg hunt, Summer picnic and pool fun and not forgetting our Christmas party.

Our service board located at the front of school, has a photo of each child with their serving parent/s, we also have staff member photos who are either veterans, married to some one in the Military or were service children themselves, so children know they are not alone and we understand.
If you are a service family, please contact Mrs Gower by emailing the school office so that your family can get involved.
