Design and Technology

At Alverstoke Junior School, we believe Design and Technology provides children with opportunities to develop their thinking and their understanding of the world around them so they become resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable members of society. We encourage our learners to think deeply, make links between their learning and be curious and critical about the world around them. Throughout each unit of work, children meaningfully engage in the design process- researching, designing, making and evaluating. Through this rich teaching of Design and Technology and authentic design contexts, we aim to stimulate creativity, imagination and problem -solving as children produce quality products to solve real and relevant problems. Children are also given regular opportunities to develop their understanding of the technological world as they evaluate existing products and consider their impact on the wider world and apply what they have learnt to their own designs.

Through our D & T curriculum, children work both independently and collaboratively. When working independently, children have complete ownership over their design choices, whilst collaborative projects strengthen vital skills such as communication and teamwork as children learn to support and help one another towards a challenging yet rewarding goal.

In addition to this, we aim to inspire children through our Design and Technology curriculum, leaving them wanting to learn more, showing progression in their skills, knowledge and understanding and developing skills and attributes they can use beyond school and into adulthood.
